Library -gottin's Lamp in Nahyeen (using SLACK)
Lunarisse enters. She is wearing a plain white dress which, incongruously, has chicken soup stains on it. She looks extremely tired and is pale. Her usually well kept hair is pull back into a pony tail with some stray ends all frazzled and askew. She looks to see if Lyn is anywhere in the Library.
Lyn is sitting near a pile of datachips laid on a short table. Some of the external secondary doors are closed due to the upgrades that are still being brought up to the library outside perimeter.
Lunarisse says "Oh Good. I am glad to see you." She leans against the wall in an uncharacteristic slouch.
Lyn tilts her head curiously when she notices the demeanor, but it takes her a fair amount of time to snap out of her bubble to do so. "Hello... Directrix... What can I do for you?" She harbors a very wan smile while saying so.
"I need to do some.. geneaological research." She frowns. "Doesn't the Empire have something like a Book of Records for slaves to track the lines and ownership and the like?"
Lyn suddenly looks unsure of herself on a question on pure knowledge, no less."I... have you tried asking to Lady Rkard or Ms Kerhner... ? I.. am not sure slaves are kept in the Book of Records...? I admit I never really asked myself the question..."
"Yes. But surely there is some archive. How else to tell apart those who were emancipated. Or even who complied with the late Empress, Bless her Soul, edict that the 9th generation of the Minmatar were to be freed?"
Lyn nods. "That must be yes... Though I would not doubt that some registries are kept locally, or at least at different levels and layers in the administrative maze... That is why I am unsure. I think lady Rkard would know."
"I see" Lunarisse frowns. "Ms. Jenneth has been tending to some of the ... refugees we are housing. She's learned that many are separated from their families who are owned by other Holders." "Our thought was it may aid their mental recoveries if they could be placed with those Holders, if the Holders cooperate and are of the more... humane sort." "But of course.. we need some way to find them. In some instances all that is known are the names of the relatives, not the holding or owners." Lunarisse rubs the bridge of her nose. "What a mess."
Lyn looks thoughtful. "Well I guess you will have to get a proper accomodation for legal accounting on the behalf of authorities first... Again... you should talk to lady Rkard for that I think."
Lunarisse responds "Alright". She wrinkles her nose. "I had hoped to avoid going through legalities and lawyers." "But if there was an Empire-wide archive, i am sure you'd know." She still seems to have an expression of distaste. "He ruined most of those poor people. I suspect more than half may never recover."
Lyn sighs awkwardly. "Yeah, I guess there is a general registry... What I mean is that they are slaves, not citizens. Depending on the uh... seriousness of the Holder... Property can be legally declared, or it can be underground. Or on the fringe of legality." "Well. Tax evasion, etc." "Of course I guess some Holders would be glad to get those slaves without any legal support for obvious reasons but... I am not sure those are the Holders you are looking for..."
Lunarisse agrees "No, those are not." "If they have no ties to the refugees, I am ensuring they are placed with.. responsible ones."
Lyn responds "So you will need legal accountants... I suppose. Also, for the slaves with murky backgrounds and records, well... I guess you will have to dig up local archives if none can be found inthe Book of Records..."
Lunarisse says "Well. They were all validly acquired off SCC markets. As far as I am concerned, the original holders are forfeit. However, if there are family ties, it is worth looking into."
Lyn says "The problem is to know where to look at... I mean, the Empire is not especially small...Ah yes, SCC.. Well at least the SCC probably keeps traces. The problem is, they are not really accessible to capsuleers as far as I know."
Lunarisse nods. "Well, It was worth a shot. I will contact the Lady Rkard." She smiles wryly "Nothing about this operation has been easy."
Lyn mutters uncomfortably. "It is counterproductive... But yes. Lady Rkard is probably your best bet. And she has connections in the Civic Court. Baseliner connections."
Lunarisse does not immediately move. She just looks blank.
Lyn looks a bit confused for a moment. "Uh. Maybe you should rest a bit. I mean, you look totally burnt."
Lunarisse responds vague "Huh." She looks up and refocuses "Yeah. Probably not a bad idea." She takes a seat by the library table. She flicks an errant piece of chicken soup off her dress.
Lyn glances reluctantly at her. "M-maybe it is not my place to say so but... You should delegate more. Specialized clerks would do as well and go a long way to do what you want to do..."
Lunarisse sighs. "I added Aria Jenneth to help supervise the baseliner medical and nursing staff when I am not here or I need sleep." "And to help talk with the refugees." She says softly. "Mr. Utari Onzo donated some therapy dogs. A pair of the medical staff has been delegated to use them and work with the children." Lunarisse chuckles bleakly "I assigned Lord Tash Murkon as dog walker... I... obviously wasn't thinking at the time."
Lyn almost chokes. "The worst thing is that I am pretty sure he would do it just to make a point.."
Lunarisse continues: "Karmilla Strife and Velarra helped me with the soup for the children,.. so much soup. And yes I know I should have let the baseliners do it." "I needed to feel like I was actually helping them." she says softly.
Lyn now looks really embarassed. She rubs her cheek awkwardly. "Maybe you would... Er. I see. Did you feel that you were helping them?" She asks out of curiosity, or maybe something else.
Lunarisse continues: "Sick children always like chicken soup." "Lord Zekekial Ilkyr and Ms. Strife's holder father have agreed to take those well enough to return to a Holder. " She pauses and adds "Seraphim Risen and Velarra have also helped me.. er... find long-term care arrangements for those unfit to go to a Holder." She sighs. "So yes, i've delegated. I think its.. the emotional and spiritual stress that has me so tired."
Lyn asks: "Do you feel you have not done enough?"
Lunarisse simply shrugs. "I feel helpless."
Lyn answers without much delicateness, though with no ill intent at all. "We are."
She adds. "Demi-gods or not. Especially when other demi gods have an opposite effect on what one tries to do." "I think that trying to make everything perfect is lying to oneself in a way. At least until we reach godhood itself."
Lunarisse says: "I question sometimes how God can allow such beings to exist if they are effectively exempt from retribution, in this life or the next."
Lyn tilts her head. "Very respectfully Directrix, and er... this is merely my interpretation of course... But I think that is where so many Amarr are... well. Misguided." "There is God, and there is God... The concept, God, and the God of men. Both are different." The God that we cannot fully comprehend, the Divine. And the God of our ideals. The God in the Scriptures, and the law of Man. The God that embodies the Amarrian ideals of their time." "If you are referring to the former, then I fear the answer is still out of reach. Maybe God has no moral scales and is above that. The universal? How could it be good without being bad, if it is universal?" She takes a breath, "If you are referring to the latter, then the question is, how can the Amarr let that happen. The answer is obviously within our reach here."
Lunarisse says testily "the Scriptures embody what we are to do and the consequences. But he - Nauplius- seems beyond them." She gazes at Lyn "But as for how we can let him happen, do tell me the answer as to how to stop him. PIE and the Society and others have all failed." "What is the obvious solution to Nauplius?"
Lyn responds: "Well, the God of Men is finite and has finite powers.... As for the other, why should he care?" She shakes her head. "If the answer was so easy I think the problem would have been solved long ago... But I would advise what works best against most capsuleers: ignore them to death."
Lunarisse says "That doesn't help people like those in our hangar." "he's made it clear to me, he wants to be left alone, When I offer to leave him alone if he stops even sacrificing them, he refuses." Lunarisse simply looks.. frustrated. "Nauplius would be quite happy to be ignored. While he continues to sacrifice and torture tens of thousands."
Lyn shrugs. "Maybe... Though if you look rationally at the issue, his actions are negligible in comparison to what happens every day around. But if you feel that it is for you to do what you can where you can, against the problem you are able to tackle and solve, then... I guess it makes sense." "That makes you a force for God. A finite one." "I suppose...?" She notices that what she is saying may not be what Luna is expecting to hear. "... I am sorry that I am unable to provide answers. It is frustrating." She hesitates a long time. "I... h-have something I have to say too." She looks away. "I think I will retire."
Lunarisse says softly "Oh."
Lyn starts rambling: "I have learned a lot of things,... But I think the answers I am looking for are elsewhere..." She looks back at Luna. "But I am ever grateful for what the Society did for me."
Lunarisse asks: "So I.. we.. didn't do anything to make you dissastisfied I hope?"
Lyn looks horrified. "N-not at all!" "The rest of Amarr maybe. I don't mind."
Lunarisse responds: "Well.. that's a relief anyway." She looks at Lyn. "As I've told other members of the Society, we don't own you. I accept that every member's stay with us will come to an end eventually. The door is always open should you decide to resume activities if you retire, or to rejoin if you leave." "I value the time you have given us, and I thank you for that." She says softly. "I will pray you find what you are looking for."
Lyn lowers her head, apparently pained. "Likewise... Thank you."
Lunarisse gives a faint smile. "When do you expect your retirement to take effect?"
Lyn responds; "P-probably something like a week..." "The library should be complete by then."
Lunarisse responds: "Wonderful." An impish smile comes to Luna's lips despite everything "I even know what i shall name it." "Well I look forward to seeing it."
Lyn blinks but doesn't notice. She has something else on her mind. She twists her fingers nervously.
Lunarisse: "Is there something else, Lyn?"
Lyn: "I do... not want to... keep. I mean.... it is going to sound awfully mushy." She blushes. "Can you tell Aria that.. I... well. like her? A bit." She lowers her head. "I mean, can you take care of her?"
Lunarisse's eyes soften. "Oh. I will certainly make sure she knows." She gives a wry smile "Ans to the extent I can take care of any of my pilots, of course I will do my best as long as she remains with the Society."
Lyn looks relieved, but rather eager to move on to another subject.
Lunarisse stands. "Thank you for your service Lyn, Hopefully I will see you this weekend for the Library's opening." She gives a bleak smile "it's lunch time and I have chicken soup to serve"
Lyn nods meekly.
Lunarisse exits.
