Essay Assignment

To: Nicoletta Mithra, Lunarisse Aspenstar

Directrix Mithra,

You have asked me to write a short essay on my 'project.' You have specifically asked me to detail my questions as to 'the Amarr,' how SFRIM will be necessary or helpful in answering those questions, and the ethical concerns I face in respect to my dealings with SFRIM members.

What you are asking for, I take in part to be a demonstration that I can communicate on your terms. But you've also asked me to explain my project. If I am to represent it truthfully, it will have to be on my own terms, in the way I think of it. Else, the project is not my own.

I wish to grasp the place of the Amarr in the Totality, as a people, as a power, and as a sphere of influence. I want to understand, holistically, the role you play in the scheme of things. I also wish to know the same of each and every component part of the Empire, down to the last merchant and slave-- recognizing, of course, that this is an impossible goal. At most, I will manage a frail, wispy outline: a sketch.

Dealing with you and yours in your daily lives will be a chance, possibly my best or even my only chance, to see the culture functioning, as it were, behind the scenes. Without such a place in at least one strongly Amarrian circle, my “sketch” will lack much of the depth it might have possessed. Its value, to others or to myself, will be much reduced.

As for ethical concerns: I think, in this area, there is a great misunderstanding between us. I do not know what you expect me to do if given free ethical rein, exactly. Run roughshod over your people's lives, perhaps? Try to subvert their faith? Stress test them with a bolt pistol?

It may be difficult for a person so skeptical of relativistic cultures to believe, but I do hold certain principles of broad applicability. These principles are not based on orders from God or the Totality, it's true. Rather, they come of the basic condition, as we see it, of being human.

Moderation, for to go to extremes is to trample the lives of others.

Humility, for we are all of us mere fragments of the Totality. The stars will remember none of us.

Compassion, for it is only the Totality's patterns that separate one person's fair fortune from another's sad fate. We are all in this vale of illusions together.

To my eye, it would be best to pass through your company like a shadow, hardly noticed. It is rude of me to intrude and disrupt your lives, to leave fingerprints on everything I touch. Necessarily, I will be an intruder, and since I cannot hope to leave no impression at all, I hope to leave only memories of a curious, harmless traveler.

Likewise, it would be rude of me to act in ways that will bring trouble, embarrassment, or harm upon you and yours. I am a writer, and my words have the potential to do a lot of damage. This, I by no means intend to do. Confidences will be kept confidential. Identities will be anonymized by default. Strategic information will remain out of the public record.

My religion is strange to your nation, and it is not my purpose to spread mine or to undercut yours. I will proselytize to none, and welcome the efforts of others to convert me, though I cannot promise to embrace the visions you and yours will offer. I am neither a blank page, nor a convert already won. I can promise only that what I learn here will remain with me, long after my sojourn ends.

On a personal note, Directrix, we have been enemies, in the past. Reading over the records, we crossed paths many times, but in the end, it was I who defeated myself.

Looking back, now, I see the trail of destruction I left. My followers haunt me, their faces sometimes kindly, sometimes angry or skeptical, but ... most of the time, there is an emptiness there, a ... touch of the abyss. One may even be stalking me, hoping to restore me to the person I was by force. Gods help me if I fall into his hands.

The Captain Jenneth you knew had watched her father beat her mother to death before her eight-year-old eyes. She had endured a year as a half-blood in a State creche before being brought properly into her mother's family, who hated her. She lost her first life trying to prove herself to them. It was that family's patriarch that she later murdered during a sparring match in an instant of searing spite.

Helpfully for me, she wrote a journal entry memorializing the occasion.

I hold no distorting memory of this kind. I was born into this life. I have come to you weak, damaged, fragile, and afraid, but, if I survive, I will not remain so. Already, I am finding my voice, and it is neither weak nor fearful. Poisoned or not, damaged or not, I am stronger than I was.

I am here to seek a vision of your society, and of your God, Directrix Mithra. It is for you to decide your part in how I will experience them.

The shelves are filled haphazardly with bottles of spirits, clearly labeled. The whiskeys shelf label has been taped over by Freya and Lucas, each bidding for ownership. There is a shelf with rum on it, with a fresh label reading 'Alexi'. Above that, is Nicoletta's shelf, with juice mixes and exotic wine, with a few bottles of absinthe here and there. Cocktail mixers and a jar of little umbrellas wrapped with a piece of tape reading 'Gottin's Dont Touch!!' is on her shelf. There is a shelf with a pair of bottles, one full of Absynth and the other full of Chocolate Irish Cream and etched "Lady Anise Tig'res of the Khanid Kingdom." A long line of bottles of Quafe are on a shelf with a "DON'T TOUCH!" sign by Rhoxy. Johanes has a shelf with brandies and cognac and a lone bottle of smurgleblaster. One shelf labeled "Lord Anderson's" has three bottles of brandy from Gallente space, along with other liquors. Another shelf labeled "Lord Tash-Murkon" has a secure black metal container with a biometric lock with a Sapidum Distillery Emblem - 'Sapidum 255' from a Khanid small batch distillery on Oris..A new shelf has been added to expand Lunarisse's growing collection. She still has her spiced wine and other vintages from around New Eden, with a few religious texts leaning against the bottles. New to her collection is one tall, elegant bottle with amarrian scrollwork of Cream Liqueur, one tall elegant bottle with amarrian scrollwork of Chocolate Liqueur, one stout, wide bottle with amarrian scroll work of Chocolate sauce with added black tea. All wrapped in a box made out of a richly coloured, dark wood box patterened with khanid designs and filled with padding covered by black suede to keep the bottles safe. With "Lady Tig'res' Special Recipie" on the front of the box in gold leaf. All carvings almost burnt into the wood, with golden leaf in the recesses. The front of the box has a golden plated clasp and it has two golden hinges. It is locked and can only be opened by Lunarisse.There are a few other shelves that hold overflow for now, waiting for new corp members to claim them.
